Urpazhassi Theyyam

The most famous kaav of urpazhassi is in a place called Edakkad, in Kannur district. In Urpazhassi kaav, there is a seperate and special place for Kshethrapaalan and Bhadrakaali. But the prime devote in this kaav is Urpazhassi. Urpazhassi is considered as a Kshathriya king with its charming head gear. The history behind Urpazhassi is more humane when compared with kshethrapaalan and veerabhadran. A nari female from melur prayed Lord Vishnu and was blessed with a son. He was called Melur Dayarappan. The activities of Dayarappan was so unbearable. He brutally murdered his teacher who once tried to correct his wrong deed. He even attempted a murder on his own mother. Killed Karakunnath nair and a Kurupp who invaded his family properties. Its believed that in a shot span of 34 years, he committed 64 murders. Dayarappan soon became the emperor of the area and later became devine. People started respecting him and lot of credentials were awarded to him. Dayarappan befriended with Vettaykkara Magan. Vettaykkara Magan was part of Lord Shiva and Dayarappan part of Vishnu. In this belief they are performed in the form of theyyam. The fort of Dayarappan became Urpazhassi Kaav. Urpazhassi theyyam is performed during the kaliyattam in this kaav. Its widely considered that Dayarappan was a famous nair warrior, who fought back the land that is supposed to belong to his family ancestors.
