Thondachan OR Puli maranja thondachan is the God of people from Pulaya Community. A landlord by name Chenichery Kunjambu, bught a female slave from Maadayi kaav. Name of the slave was "Kaavil Valli Kudichi". She was designed to work on the farm of landlord. She has a better livelyhood under him. She was also married to an abled person. Soon they had a son called Kaari. Kaari soon displayed his skills in martial arts and other learnings. He wanted to learn Kalari, but unfortunately the boy who belong to a low caste Pulaya, was not allowed to learn Kalari. With the help of landlord, Kaari was admitted to 18 kalaris in North Kerala. The 18th one called Chodhiyar Kalari was run by a female. From this Kalari, he learned the most supreme and dangerous trick in Kalari. It was a trick by which a human would get himself converted to a tiger. But the female teacher somehow learned about the history of Kaari and his caste. She cursed him, "The tricks that he learned through a lie, would surely cause him his life". The landlord started his own Kalari, and Kaari became the teacher of the Kalari. Kaari was soon a famous personality in the area. A king at a far off place, had a mental illness which no one could cure. Kaari soon set out to cure the disease. Kaari was warned by landlord to be carefull about the threat to his life on the way. To the astonishment of the folks, Kaari cured the mental illness. Now King had another request for Kaari. He wanted to see the invisible trick that Kaari had learned. Trick was extremely dangerous, but Kaari was upto the challenge. At the end of the performance, it required someone faithfull to revert the performer who had turned Tiger back to human. A mix of cattle dung and water was to be sprinkled on the face with a broom. Kaari assigned this extremely critical task to his wife. Kaari amazed the king by becoming a tiger but when he went to his wife, she was terrified and closed the door of house behind her. Tiger turned Kaari got angry and smashed open the door and killed his wife. The tiger who could not get back to his human form, ran away to the forest and died in the tiger form. Bad omens were showing in the kings land. Analysis of jyothishis led to the conclusion that Kaari was to be performed as theyyam. The first theyyam was performed in front of the king and he called the theyyam Maadayi Kaari Gurukkal. This theyyam was later known by the name Puli Maranja Thondachan. The theyyam , Puli Maranja Thondachan convey the message that tricks and educations which are learned through false means would not benefit us and can lead us to danger. Puli Maranja thondachan also depicts the facts that there existed slavery in thiruvarkaad and that the Kings behaved in a kind manner towards the Pulaya community.
