Puthiya Bhagavathy also known as puthiyavar is a godess created by Lord Shiva for the eradication of small pox from the surface of earth. Puthiya bhagavathy is believed to be originated from the "Homa kunda" of Pathillath Patteri. Godess called Cheerma is considered to be the one spreading smallpox and puthiya Bhagavathy is set out for its eradication. When Shiva created Puthiya Bhagavathy, he also created 6 brothers for Puthiya Bhagavathy. One demon killed these brothers. Puthiya Bhagavathy took its furious form and killed the demon. She also burnt the palace where these brothers used to live. Travelled to Kottikulam and killed fisherman there. Bhagavathy reached a place called Padar Kulangara and killed a Bhrahman whom she saw. This Bhrahman has also become godliness and is performed as theyyam by the name padar kulangara veeran. Puthiya Bhagavathy reached kanjangad and displayed the strength in this area. A kurupp(Person who is known by his caste) soon devoted her and started to perform her as theyyam. Soon, Puthiya Bhagavathy was idolised and widely respected and performed as theyyam. When the small pox disease used to spread in olden days, people used to pray Puthiya Bhagavathy and the theyyam was performed.
