Puli / Tiger Theyyam

Puliyoor Kaali, Puliyoor Kannan and Other Puli Theyyam In the forest of thulavanam, Shiva took the form of Pulikkandan and Parvathy took the form of Puli karingali. They enjoyed their days in the forest and after 10 months, gave birth to 5 male cubs, Kandappuli, Maarappuli, Pulimaaruthan, Kaalappuli, Puliyoor Kannan and the only female cub Puliyoor Kali. One night, the tiger gods got into the cattleshed of kurumbrathiri vanon, and killed his cattles and brought great losses. Kurumbrathiri vanon was disgusted as he never missed to offer prayers to god and this was the outcome. A proud friend Karindhiri kannan agreed to help and made a hideout to catch the tiger. The next night, when the tigers came, before karindhiri kannan would aim the arrow, he was attacked from unexpected angles by the tiger and consequently led to his death. Karindhiri Kannan who was killed also became devine and is performed in theyyam. Tiger Gods by then were residing in the thuluvanam forest. One year, Kariyath Thandan from Ramaram went to thuluvanam to see the festival. The tiger gods followed Thandan and idolised themselves at Ramaram. Apart from this location, tiger gods were also residing at the house of Panayandhatta Nair. But the deeds of tiger Gods were beyond limits. Once uring a festival, he complained to Muchilott bhagavathy about the deeds of tiger gods. Muchilott bhagavathy uprooted the lamp, which was supposed to be the idol of tiger gods and re rooted in koroth muchilott on the left of corridor. Thus the puliyoor Kannan and Puliyoor Kaali became popular presence in all the muchilott kaav. Puliyoor Kannan is considered as "Deivam(GOD)" for vaniya caste. Puliyoor kannan is considered and devoted as the prominent presence in the chakkalas (where the oil is extracted from dry coconut).
