Theyyams have followers not only from Hindu community, but even from Muslim. One such theyyam which is associated with Muslim Community is Aali Theyyam. There are certain kaav in Malabar mainly Kasargode and Kannur district, where muslim theyyams are performed. At a place called Kumbala, in Kasargode district, there was a theeya family by the name Aarikaad.
There was a black magiciam by the name Aali. The evils deeds by Aali were so inhuman. He even made an attempt to man handle the girl in theeya family. The elders in family prayed to Paadar Kulangara Bhagavathy for help.Paadar Kulangara Bhagavathy requested Puthiya Bhagavathy for a solution.Puthiya Bhagavathy took the form of a beautiful female and invited Aali into a nearby pond.Inside the pond, the beautiful lady, removed the knot and chain from Aali's waist which contained all the power of Aali.
Bhagavathy showed her real self and killed Aali right in the pond. After the death, there were many evil incidences happening in the nearby areas. Expert analysis were carried out and found that Aali was to be performed as theyyam. Appearence of Aali theyyam is markedly different from the other normal theyyams. Face is painted black with charcoal. Long cap on head which is golden in colour. Garland around the neck and red silken Dhothi and a cane in the hand. A structure and costume which is unique and entirely different from the customary theyyams. A packed audience comprising both Hindu and Muslims gather around for this auspicious event. This theyyam is also known as Aali Bootham. At some areas story has a variation that Aali was killed by Raktha Chamundi.
